Selling Your Music Online

Selling your music online can be a straightforward endeavour. Numerous platforms provide detailed step-by-step guides on setting up an account. Below you'll find a list of music distributor websites you can use depending on your genre.

Publishing

Music publishing is an essential process that involves developing, protecting, and valuing music. Music publishers are crucial in nurturing talent and managing the business aspects — enabling composers and songwriters to focus entirely on their creativity.

The Role of a Music Publisher

  • Finding and nurturing emerging songwriters, offering encouragement and support including living expenses and production facilities.
  • Securing commissions for new works and helping to coordinate workflow.
  • Registering works with all appropriate collecting societies (e.g. PRS for Music in the UK).
  • Producing demo recordings and performance materials (score and parts).
  • Producing and licensing printed music and promotional materials.
  • Promoting composers and songwriters to performers, broadcasters, and record companies nationally and internationally.
  • Licensing the use of music — directly for individual usages (e.g. sync deals) or via collecting society networks.
  • Monitoring and tracking use of music and ensuring proper payment for all licensed uses.
  • Making royalty payments to songwriters and composers for the usage of their music.
  • Taking appropriate action against anyone using music without the necessary licence.

Music Publishing and Copyright

The business of music publishing relies heavily on a robust copyright framework that protects the rights of creators. Without adequate copyright protections, there would be little motivation for writers and composers to share their gifts or for publishers to support their journeys.

Partnership With Writers

The relationship between a music publisher and a songwriter is built on trust and mutual respect, supported by a publishing contract. Songwriters assign the copyright of their music to the publisher, who promotes, exploits, and protects that music. In return, the publisher shares a portion of income earned as royalties.

Collecting Royalties — IMRO Example

IMRO (the Irish Music Rights Organisation) administers the performing rights for copyrighted music in Ireland. Broadcasters, venues, and businesses pay a blanket licence fee, giving them freedom to play music without securing rights for each individual song.

IMRO collects these funds and distributes them fairly to songwriters, composers, and publishers — a process known as public performance royalties.

Publisher eligibility: To join IMRO, publishers need a catalogue of at least 10 works, with a minimum of 5 having commercial success within the EU in the last two years. For international royalties, IMRO has partnerships with PRS (UK), ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC (US).

Music Distributors

The following platforms can help you distribute your music online.

What Are Handles?

AdaHandles is a unique NFT, minted and issued on the Cardano blockchain. Ada Handle is a human-readable address system for Cardano, simplifying transactions by replacing complex wallet addresses with memorable names.

The Problem Handles Solve

When making transactions on the blockchain, senders typically need to copy or type a receiver's full wallet address — a long, complex string. Here's what that looks like before and after an AdaHandle:

Before & After AdaHandle

$djmark@mixcloud

What Are SubHandles?

SubHandles are an extension of Handles for individuals, companies, and dApps that need more than one handle associated with a brand. For example, $djmark@mixcloud or $techno@mixcloud — where $mixcloud is the root Handle.

Benefits for Artists

  • Make your wallet address easy to remember and share — perfect for livestream screens and social media bios.
  • Receive ADA donations during live DJ sets or performances by displaying your handle.
  • Supports embedded QR codes, social media links, and other profile features via handle.me.
  • SubHandles allow artists to create multiple identities under one brand or organisation.
Real-world use case: DJ Mark live streams every Saturday night. By displaying $djmark@mixcloud on screen, listeners can easily send ADA donations without needing his full wallet address.

Its peer-reviewed development process means the network is robust, secure, and built to last.

What We Cover

  • Music distribution — platforms, publishing, royalties, and copyright explained clearly.
  • AdaHandles — your human-readable identity on the Cardano blockchain.
  • Wallets — hot and cold storage options for everyday use and long-term security.
  • Projects — platforms and tools being built on Cardano for artists.
  • Resources — curated articles and guides for artists entering the Web3 space.
Getting started: If you're new to Cardano, the best first step is setting up a wallet. Head to our Wallets page to find the right option for you.
⚠ Important — Please Read First: This guide is provided for informational purposes only. All responsibility for setting up and managing your wallet lies with you as the individual. Always use official, trusted links. Never share your seed phrase or wallet keys with anyone under any circumstances. ADA for Artists cannot be held responsible for any loss of funds or assets.

Before You Begin

Lace is a browser extension wallet developed by IOG (Input Output Global), the company behind Cardano. It's one of the most polished and feature-rich Cardano wallets available. This guide covers setup via the Chrome browser extension, which works on Chrome, Brave, and Edge.

1
Download

Visit the Official Lace Website

Open your browser and go to the official Lace website at www.lace.io. Always make sure you are on the correct URL before downloading anything.

Click the "Download Lace" button on the homepage. This will take you to the Chrome Web Store to install the browser extension.

Stay safe: Only ever download Lace from lace.io or the official Chrome Web Store. Do not download wallet extensions from any other source, pop-up ads, or links shared in social media messages.
2
Install

Install the Browser Extension

On the Chrome Web Store page, click "Add to Chrome", then confirm by clicking "Add extension" in the pop-up dialog.

Once installed, you'll see the Lace icon appear in your browser's extension toolbar. Click it to open the wallet for the first time. You may want to pin the extension to your toolbar for easy access.

3
Create

Create a New Wallet

When Lace opens for the first time, you'll be given two options: "Create a new wallet" or "Import an existing wallet". Since this is your first time, choose "Create a new wallet".

Enter a wallet name — this is just for your own reference and can be anything you like.

Next, create a strong spending password. This password is used to authorise transactions from within the Lace interface. Choose something secure that you will remember, but do not use the same password as your email or banking accounts.

4
Critical Step

Write Down Your Recovery Phrase (Seed Phrase)

Lace will generate a 24-word recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase. This is the most important step in the entire process.

Your seed phrase is the only way to recover your wallet if you lose access to your device or forget your password. Anyone who has your seed phrase has complete access to your wallet and all its funds.

🔒 Golden rules for your seed phrase:

• Write it down on paper — never type it into a phone, computer, or online form
• Store it somewhere physically safe — not in your email, cloud storage, or a screenshot
• Never share it with anyone — not a friend, a support agent, or any website
• If anyone asks for your seed phrase, it is a scam — no exceptions

Write down all 24 words in the exact order shown. Lace will ask you to verify them on the next screen — make sure they match exactly.

5
Verify

Confirm Your Recovery Phrase

Lace will ask you to re-enter several of your 24 words in order to confirm you've written them down correctly. Carefully enter the requested words from your written copy.

Once verified, your wallet will be created and you'll be taken to the main Lace dashboard.

6
Your Wallet is Ready

Explore Your New Lace Wallet

You're in! Your Lace wallet dashboard shows your ADA balance, your wallet address, and quick links to send, receive, and stake ADA.

To receive ADA, click "Receive" and share your wallet address — or better yet, set up an AdaHandle to give people a simple, memorable address to send to.

To send ADA, click "Send", enter the recipient's address or handle, the amount, and confirm with your spending password.

7
Optional

Connect a Hardware Wallet for Extra Security

For extra security — especially if you plan to hold a significant amount of ADA — you can connect a hardware (cold) wallet such as a Ledger or Trezor to Lace. This means transactions require physical confirmation on the device, protecting you even if your computer is compromised.

Visit the Wallets page to learn more about cold wallet options.

You're all set. You now have a fully functional Cardano wallet. Remember — the security of your wallet is entirely your responsibility. Store your seed phrase safely, use trusted links, and never share your keys with anyone.
Go to lace.io ↗
🔑

Never Share Your Seed Phrase or Private Keys

Your seed phrase (recovery phrase) and private keys are the master access to your wallet and everything in it. This is the number one rule in crypto — no exceptions.

  • No legitimate wallet, exchange, support agent, or website will ever ask for your seed phrase
  • Never type your seed phrase into any website, app, or online form
  • Never send it via email, DM, chat, or text message
  • Never photograph it and store it on a device connected to the internet
  • If someone asks for your seed phrase, it is a scam — always, without exception
🔗

Always Use Official and Trusted Links

Scammers create fake websites that look identical to real ones to steal your credentials and funds. Always verify you are on the correct URL before connecting your wallet or entering any information.

  • Bookmark official wallet websites — do not rely on search results every time
  • Double-check the URL in your browser address bar before logging in or connecting
  • Be cautious of links shared in Discord, Telegram, Twitter/X, or email — even from people you know
  • If you receive an unexpected message about your wallet or a reward, treat it as suspicious
  • Only download browser extensions from the official Chrome Web Store using trusted links
🎭

Beware of Impersonation and Social Engineering

Scammers frequently impersonate well-known figures, official support teams, and trusted community members to trick people into handing over access to their wallets.

  • No official team member or support agent will ever DM you first asking for help or offering rewards
  • Be wary of "free ADA giveaways" — if it sounds too good to be true, it is
  • Fake NFT minting links are extremely common — only interact with projects via their verified official channels
  • Scammers may create accounts with names or logos nearly identical to legitimate projects
  • When in doubt, verify through multiple official sources before taking any action
📱

Keep Your Devices and Wallet Software Updated

Security vulnerabilities are regularly discovered and patched. Staying up to date is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself.

  • Keep your browser and wallet extensions updated to the latest versions
  • Use a dedicated browser or profile for Web3 activity where possible
  • Be cautious about what other extensions you install alongside your wallet
  • Use a strong, unique password for your wallet spending password
  • Consider using a hardware wallet for long-term storage of larger amounts

Good Habits for Staying Safe in Web3

Building good habits from the start is the best way to protect yourself and your assets over the long term.

  • Write your seed phrase on paper and store it in a physically secure location
  • Use a hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor, Keystone) for any significant holdings
  • Start small — send a test transaction before moving larger amounts
  • Research any platform, dApp, or NFT project thoroughly before connecting your wallet
  • Disconnect your wallet from dApps after you've finished using them
  • Trust your instincts — if something feels off, stop and verify before proceeding

What is Stuff.io?

Stuff.io is a decentralised platform built on Cardano that lets creators publish and sell digital content as Media Tokens — giving buyers true, verifiable ownership of their purchase on the blockchain. Unlike traditional digital downloads, Media Tokens cannot be duplicated or stolen, and creators keep a share of every resale through built-in royalties.

The platform supports three main content types that artists will find immediately useful:

🎵

Music

Albums, singles, EPs, DJ mixes, and soundscapes. Fans own the file, not just a licence.

🖼

Art & Photography

Digital artwork, photography collections, illustrations, and printable files.

📖

Books

eBooks, poetry collections, zines, guides, and written works of any kind.

Before You Start

You'll need two things ready before you can publish on Stuff.io:

  • A Cardano wallet with a small amount of ADA to cover transaction fees (a few ₳ is enough to get started). If you don't have one yet, see our Lace Wallet Setup guide.
  • Your digital file ready to upload — high quality is always best. Supported formats include MP3, FLAC, WAV (music), JPG, PNG (art), and PDF, EPUB (books).
1
Account

Visit Stuff.io and Connect Your Wallet

Go to stuff.io using your browser. Click the "Connect Wallet" button in the top-right corner of the site.

A prompt will appear asking you to select your Cardano wallet. Choose the wallet you set up (e.g. Lace, Eternl, or Yoroi). Your wallet extension will open and ask you to approve the connection — click "Connect" or "Authorise".

Stay safe: Only connect your wallet on the official Stuff.io website. Connecting your wallet to a site does not give it access to your funds — it only allows it to request transactions, which you must approve manually each time.
2
Account

Access the Creator Portal

Once your wallet is connected, navigate to the Creator Portal. You'll find this in the main navigation menu or at stuff.io/creator.

If this is your first time, you'll be asked to set up a creator profile. Fill in your creator name, a short bio, and optionally a profile image. This is what buyers will see on your storefront, so make it reflect you and your work.

3
Upload

Create a New Listing

Click "Create" or "New Product" inside the Creator Portal. You'll be asked to select your content type — choose from Music, Art, or Book.

Fill in the details for your listing:

  • Title — the name of your release or work
  • Description — tell the story behind it; this is your sales pitch to buyers
  • Cover Image — a high-quality image that represents your work (minimum 800×800px recommended)
  • Content File — the actual file buyers will receive (MP3, PDF, PNG, etc.)
  • Category / Tags — help buyers find your work through search and browsing
4
Pricing

Set Your Price and Royalties

Set the price in ADA (₳) for your Media Token. You can price it at whatever you feel reflects the value of your work — there is no minimum or maximum.

You'll also be asked to set a secondary market royalty percentage. This is the percentage you earn every time your token is resold on the secondary market. A common range is 5–15%, but it's entirely your choice.

You can also set a limited edition — for example, only 100 copies available — which can increase the perceived value and collectibility of your work.

Tip: Secondary royalties are one of the most powerful features of blockchain ownership. Unlike a traditional music sale, you continue to earn every time your work changes hands — forever.
5
Mint

Mint Your Media Token

Once you're happy with your listing details and pricing, click "Publish" or "Mint". Your wallet will open and ask you to approve a small transaction — this is the on-chain minting fee, typically just a few ₳.

Confirm the transaction in your wallet. After a few moments, your Media Token will be minted on the Cardano blockchain and your listing will go live on the Stuff.io marketplace.

Congratulations — your work is now live, tokenised, and available for anyone in the world to purchase.

6
Music

Selling Music Specifically

For musicians, Stuff.io is also connected to Book.io's wider ecosystem, which supports audio content. When listing music, consider offering tiered releases:

  • A standard edition at a lower price for casual listeners
  • A collector's edition at a higher price with bonus content (stems, instrumentals, liner notes as a PDF)
  • A limited edition with a low supply cap to reward your biggest fans

Buyers receive the file directly in their wallet or via the Stuff.io app. They can re-sell it, gift it, or hold it as a collectible — and you earn your royalty every time.

7
Art

Selling Art and Photography

For visual artists and photographers, Media Tokens are a powerful alternative to traditional NFTs on platforms like OpenSea. On Stuff.io your work lives on Cardano — a greener, lower-fee blockchain.

  • Upload your image file at the highest resolution you want to distribute
  • Include a certificate of authenticity or story in the description
  • Consider bundling multiple pieces into a series or collection listing
  • Offer printable file formats (high-res PNG or PDF) so buyers can physically display your work
8
Books

Selling Books and Written Works

Stuff.io is closely linked with Book.io, one of the leading platforms for blockchain-based eBook publishing. Authors can publish directly and reach readers worldwide — without a publisher taking a cut.

  • Upload your manuscript as a PDF or EPUB file
  • Add a compelling cover image and description to attract readers browsing the marketplace
  • Set your price and royalty — authors on Book.io typically earn significantly more per sale than on traditional platforms
  • Each buyer owns their copy as a token and can re-sell or gift it while you earn royalties on every transaction

Visit book.io for the dedicated author publishing portal.

9
Promote

Share and Promote Your Listing

Your listing is live — now it's time to let people know. Stuff.io gives you a direct link to your product page that you can share anywhere.

  • Share your listing link on social media — Twitter/X, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook
  • Pin it to your bio or link-in-bio page
  • Display your AdaHandle alongside your listing so fans can easily send you tips and payments too
  • Engage with the Cardano creator community on Twitter/X and Discord to build an audience
  • List your work in Cardano NFT and creator directories for extra visibility
You're now a Web3 creator. Every sale goes directly to your wallet in ADA — no waiting for payouts, no middleman taking 30%, and no platform that can delete your account or remove your content. Your work, your rules, your revenue.
